Passive Variable Geometry

Our patented PVG technology allows the mini wind turbine to quickly self-adapt to natural changes in wind flows:

1 – Adjusts the pitch angle of the blade as you do with sails
2 – Increase and decrease the turbine diameter as in a carousel
3 – As a result, it’s 4 times faster to start

How does PVG work?

Because it is quick to start, it generates wind energy from each gust of wind that otherwise would get lost.

Our acceleration is key: demonstration of PVG

Thanks to the Re-Cognition EU Horizon project we built a small wind tunnel and measured the power increase from fixed geometry (FG) enabled by the PVG acceleration

The art of adjusting sails in turbines: coupling pitch with radius

We feel as just having transferred part of the wisdom of old sailors to the mechanics of a wind turbine, and in doing so our patents evolve from the first ideas of Darrieus and what we define the “Australian passive school” of Kirke and Pawsey back in 1990s.

But nowadays human kind somehow feels better if such type of wisdom, let’s say part of the non-linear aerodynamics science, is confirmed by Artificial Intelligence. 

Ok let’s do that! In Switzerland, an EPFL research team published in open access some great results from a wind tunnel & Particle Image Velocimetry experimental campaign where AI could choose the best variable pitch pattern for power extraction – not how to realize such a turbine, just this is in theory, then up to you humans to realize how to actuate it – or passivate it.

The best pitch pattern AI found is -20° inwards upwind and +20° outwards downwind as we do in our turbines with our PVG patents! 

This is great: and if you think about it, in 2024 actually AI just proved that human beings are still good at sailing!

Our turbine has a life span of 20 years and it is able to ensure a return on investment within the first 3-4 years. Thanks to our technology the equivalent price of electricity for the user is in fact in the range 12 – 15 €cent / kWh [*]

This is yet lower than the current price of electricity from the grid, affected by the international geopolitical equilibrium making it more than double on a few months basis.

Our goal is to drop the price of electricity down to 7 €cents / kWh thanks to industrialization of our products.
